PROVO, Utah – BYU Athletics will roll out a variety of facility upgrades and changes to LaVell Edwards Stadium for the 2018 football season opener versus the Cal Bears. Some of the major changes and additional information about game day at LaVell Edwards Stadium are below.

Game Day App
BYU has a new game day mobile app, built specifically for home games at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The new football game day app is now available for free download on both Apple and Android phones. The app will provide Cougar fans in the stadium a second-screen experience during home football games include on-demand video highlights, real-time statistics, social media components, the radio broadcast, fan interactive games, food ordering, purchasing merchandise and more.

Social Media Board
Also new to Edwards Stadium in 2018 is a state the art social media video board. Located above the east stands, the ribbon board is 8 feet high by 282 feet wide and is a larger version of the social media boards in the Marriott Center and at South Field. The new board will allow fans to interact with each other through the new game-day app. It is the first social media videoboard of its kind in college football.

Wi-Fi and DAS
Making these improvements possible for the 2018 season is a new state-of-the art Wi-Fi and distributed antenna system (DAS) in Edwards Stadium. BYU partnered with Verizon Wireless and Extreme Networks to install a cutting-edge system that will provide BYU fans the ultimate large-venue mobile connectivity experience. BYU is the first college football program in the country to implement a full-stadium, high-density Wi-Fi offload solution used in many NFL stadiums.

Clear Bag Policy
Finally, beginning this season, BYU has adopted the NFL’s clear bag policy for all home football games. This will include the following changes: Approved bags must be made of clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and should not exceed 12 x 6 x 12 inches. Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap, can be taken into the stadium with one of the clear plastic bags.

Bags that are prohibited include backpacks, cinch bags, diaper bags, fanny packs, purses and tote bags. An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at a gate designated for this purpose. For more details click on the BYU clear bag infographic.

UTA Buses and FrontRunner
Fans attending the BYU football season opener are advised to plan for extra travel time when traveling to the stadium. Below are some traffic information to be aware of on Saturday.

  • Those riding FrontRunner are advised to exit the train at Provo Station rather than Orem Station. UTA is stationing extra UVX buses at Provo Station. It’s a shorter trip to Edwards Stadium and buses are less likely to get caught in University Parkway construction.
  • After the game, board UVX buses as quickly as possible to make a return trip to Provo Station. A FrontRunner train will hold for returning buses and will serve all stations north of Provo.
  • Drivers leaving the stadium are advised of lane restrictions on westbound University Parkway at 800 East in Orem and southbound on University Avenue between 300 North and 200 South in Provo. Motorists should expect heavy delays in these areas and are advised to use alternate routes.
  • Regular FrontRunner fare is required. Please note that UVX fare is covered by a federal grant and is currently free to all riders.

State-Issued Disability Parking
There are a number of designated disabled access spots in Lot 2A (parking lot west of Edwards Stadium) that are available on a first come, first served basis. There is an additional disability lot located just north of the Indoor Practice Facility that is also accessible only to those with a state-issued disability pass. A complimentary shuttle will pick up and drop off at the disability lot and the corner of University Parkway and Canyon Road. The shuttle will run continuously from THREE hours before kickoff until ONE hour after the game. The shuttles are ADA and wheelchair accessible.

Stadium Chairs
Personal stadium chairs are permitted inside Edwards Stadium, but the stadium chairs must not exceed 18 inches wide x 16 inches deep. Chairs larger than 18 inches will encroach on the seating area of others and guests may be asked to discontinue their use.
