PROVO, Utah – The 2018 season will mark the final year of a legendary broadcast career for Marc Lyons, the radio color commentator for BYU football.

Lyons’ first broadcast was September 6, 1980, at New Mexico alongside long-time play-by-play man Paul James. Since that time, Lyons has commentated approximately 470 games on the air for the Cougars.

“I was hoping I’d die in the booth, but since I’m still alive I’m glad that I didn’t,” Lyons said. “The game of football and BYU are so close to me. I really am appreciative to BYU and to KSL and to IMG for letting me have this opportunity. It’s been really rewarding and I’ve loved it.”

This season will mark the 38th overall for Lyons, who has been on the radio broadcast every year except 1989 when he did TV work and 1990 when NCAA guidelines conflicted with high school coaching responsibilities. Lyons worked 19 years with James before teaming up with Greg Wrubell for the past 17 seasons.

“From a personality standpoint, I may be an electric guitar and Marc is more like a banjo, but I’d like to think that those two make good music together on gameday,” Wrubell said. “He’s a friend to me and a friend to the audience. It’s going to be difficult to think about not having that part of my gameday to look forward to.”

The 2018 season will also see the debut of former BYU wide receiver Mitchell Juergens as the newest member of the radio team as the sideline reporter. Known for his speed and big-play ability, Juergens had 99 receptions for 1,228 yards in his career, including a leaping game-winning touchdown catch against Boise State in 2015.

“I am eager to welcome Mitch to our radio broadcast crew and to have him reconnect with Cougar Nation,” Wrubell said. “As a BYU receiver, Mitch was tenacious, hard-working and the consummate team player. These same qualities are going to make him an excellent broadcaster, and I know that our radio audience will enjoy hearing from Mitch as he shares his knowledge and insight.”
