PROVO, Utah - BYU football continued its preparation for the 2017 season with another afternoon practice on Tuesday.

Video Highlights

Following the practice session, select members of the team met with the media. The following quotes are from Tuesday's post-practice media availability.

Defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki
"What the offense does is really complex from a defensive standpoint, so we need to make sure we’ve got all the scheme, formation, and all that stuff and all the defense that we run just nice and tight. We need guys doing their assignment and also playing technique the right way. It just takes time, especially with the younger guys.”

On the defensive line
“It’s coming. We are still waiting on a guy who is finishing up school to get in. Once he’s in, he’ll need to take a lot of reps to get caught up. But some of the younger guys that didn’t play last year are learning. There are a lot of reps to be had so that those guys can get learning how to play. It takes a lot of time to get those guys where they need to be."

"There was more experience on last year’s team with all those guys that played and had a lot of game experience and leadership. But, I think we can go deep into the depth chart as far as seconds and maybe threes in some groups who can play and contribute. But which guys are going to play, which guys are going to take reps and even play on game days is what it’s going to come down to.”

“They are a great group of kids. They are really competitive, they love the game and they love each other. It’s always fun to watch and is really enjoyable.”

Defensive back Troy Warner
"I think we’ve been doing really well actually. We’re improving each day. You know, there’s still minimal errors that we are having right now, but we are sharpening those up making sure that we minimize those and just continue to get better each day."

"Me and my teammates, my other cornerbacks, I feel like we each gotta be more consistent. At times we get maybe a little lazy maybe not as focused but if we can stay consistent, I think we’re really good. I think we’re able to lock down and do our assignment at the highest level."

"I think we’re pretty sharp right now. I think that we’re technically sound, more sound than we were a week ago or a month ago, and that’s something we’ve been practicing a lot in the off season, just being technically sound, being good at the line of scrimmage because that’s where it’s won for us, so I think we’re definitely looking sharp in that area."

They’re (quarterbacks) slinging it. Each guy is doing well right now. I haven’t seen too many errors from them. They’re putting balls in good places, so I’m expecting a lot from the quarterbacks this year as well."

"Last year I felt like maybe, physically I wouldn’t be ready. But this year, after training hard in the offseason, I feel like my body is 100 percent. I feel like I’m stronger, faster and just more mentally focused than I was last year, so that kind of has to do with why I’m more confident this year."

Tight end Moroni Laulu-Pututau
"I feel comfortable. Everything I do I feel comfortable and smooth. I am just having fun, which is most important. I’m having fun blocking as a tight end, and there is a lot more adrenaline instead of just running streaks as a receiver all day. Pulling around, seeing a D-end you need to hit, I like that. I really do."

"The connection with the quarterbacks is going really well and I think that is credit to how hard we worked as a unit in the offseason. We’re out here running routes and throwing everyday, not killing ourselves, but getting consistent."

"The number one thing for us at tight end to be successful is just to fight. That is what we have learned as a unit. We might be a little undersized against a 260-pound D-end, so we’re going to get into position, we’re going to fight, and we’re going to go every play. Have that will to win."

"Tanner [Mangum] has really improved at being a leader. I think if you ask anyone on the team, they’ll say he’s stepped up and you can tell that he feels that he has to put the team on his back and that he has that pressure. So that is good for us. We want a quarterback that can lead, that wants to win and I can tell he wants to win more than anyone else."
