BYU, Baylor announce a two-game football series

PROVO, Utah — Brigham Young University and Baylor University today announced the schools have agreed to a home-and-home football series for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. The Cougars and Bears are scheduled to play at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas, in 2021, with the second game of the series set for LaVell Edwards Stadium in 2022.

“We are excited to have Baylor on our schedule again,” said BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe. “The last series between the two schools featured two legendary hall of fame coaches in LaVell Edwards and Grant Teaff. Baylor is an exceptional football program and it’s great to see the two schools competing again.”

The Cougars and Bears have faced off twice with the series tied at 1-1. BYU opened its 1983 season on the road with a 40-36 loss at Baylor. It would be BYU’s last loss in over two years, as the Cougars ran off a string of 25-straight victories, including a 47-13 win over Baylor in Provo during the 1984 season.

Baylor is a private institution that was founded in 1845 and played its first season of football in 1898. The Bears are a founding member of the Big 12 Conference and recently captured back-to-back conference football championships in 2013 and 2014. Baylor has been to 22 bowl games and won nine conference titles. In addition, the Bears boast 15 Consensus All-Americans, 10 College Football Hall of Fame Inductees and have won 15 major national awards, including the Heisman Trophy, Davey O’Brien Award, Sammy Baugh Trophy, Biletnikoff Award, Jim Thorpe Award, Ray Guy Award, Manning Award, Jim Parker Trophy, Chic Harley Award and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.

BYU was founded in 1875 and played its first season of intercollegiate football in 1922. Over the past 40 seasons the Cougars rank No. 5 among all FBS programs in total wins with 357 victories. BYU has appeared in 34 bowl games, won 23 conference titles and the 1984 National Championship. In addition, the Cougars boast 13 Consensus All-Americans, seven College Football Hall of Fame Inductees and have won 15 major national awards, including the Heisman Trophy, Davey O’Brien Award, Sammy Baugh Trophy, Outland Trophy, Doak Walker Award and Maxwell Award.
