NFL hopefuls participate in BYU Pro Day
PROVO, Utah — Several former Cougar football players met with scouts, performed combine tests and demonstrated position-specific skills in BYU's NFL Pro Day on Friday morning at the Indoor Practice Facility.
In addition to the 16 participants, professional scouts from 24 NFL teams and one CFL team were in attendance along with current players, media members and family members.
Former BYU players who participated included wide receivers Devon Blackmon, Terenn Houk and Mitch Mathews, running back Adam Hine and offensive lineman Ryker Mathews. Defensive linemen Bronson Kaufusi and Graham Rowley, linebackers Manoa Pikula and Teu Kautai and defensive back Michael Wadsworth. Kicker Trevor Samson also took part along with former wide receiver Ross Apo. Justin Brown and Ammon Olsen of Southern Utah, Tigi Hill of Mesa Community College and Madison Mangum of Idaho State also worked out at BYU's Pro Day.
Participants displayed their abilities in the vertical jump, broad jump, bench press, 40-yard dash, 20- and 60-yard shuttle runs, three-cone drill and position workouts.
Among the highlights were Mitch Mathews recording a low 4.4 40-yard dash and a 38-inch vertical to go along with a 10-9 broad jump. Graham Rowley had 27 reps on the bench press while Manoa Pikula had 24. Bronson Kaufusi only participated in position drills after turning in times and measurements at the NFL Combine in February.
Following the testing, quarterback Olsen threw to receivers with one of the highlights a one-handed grab by Blackmon. The scouts also had players run through some defensive drills before some lineman work. Samson displayed his abilities at the end, showing his consistency in field goal kicking.
The 2016 NFL Draft runs Thursday-Saturday, April 28-30. The first round will be broadcast live from Chicago's Auditorium Theatre on ESPN.
