QUOTES

BYU Head Coach Kalani Sitake

On progress in spring practice:
“We’re getting a lot accomplished as far as our techniques and fundamentals. Seeing our offensive linemen block and get off the line of scrimmage is really good. Our run game is working well with the pass, and we’ve got a lot of guys running around in our defensive package. Today was a really good practice.”

On player adjustments to learning the offense and defense:
“Ty is really smart on how much he can load up on the install and he knows when to pull back. I think our guys are grasping the scheme a lot better than I anticipated. These guys are really smart, and they love the game. They’re spending a lot of their own time learning the offense and the defense. It’s been really nice to watch and see their progress.”

On player talent and development:
“I think there’s a lot of guys on this team that I think have great potential to do great things on the field and play at the next level. We just have to make sure that they’re in the right position and develop them the right way. If you do things the right way and put guys in the right position, they’ll have opportunities to play at the next level."

Sophomore TE Josh Weeks

On the team after the first spring practices:
“I just think there’s a lot of excitement going on and a lot of energy. Everyone’s just flying around, working hard and fighting. I think we have done that in the past, but we’ve taken it to another level during these first spring practices and with the new coaches and new system, it’s just been going great.”

On the move to tight end:
“Since high school I’ve probably put on 30 pounds, so they just thought it would be a better move for me to move inside. They just wanted someone that had that experience route running and catching, and they had a void there and they thought I could fill it. I’ve really liked the transition so far.”

Junior OL Tuni Kanuch

On health during spring practices:
“It’s good, I feel good. The coaches are really good at keeping us healthy, playing smart and practicing, lifting and running hard. But we just keep in the back of our minds that we’ve got to stay healthy. The season’s a long way away and we need to get better. We need every player and we need all the depth that we can, especially with our schedule. I love the way that the coaches run the program.”

On the offensive line:
“When you play with new guys, you just have to get used to them. It’s all about chemistry on the line. There are five dudes and you have to build that wall, so you’ve got to be able to read each other’s minds. So as you play with new people, it just takes time. But I think we are getting better and learning the plays.”
