PROVO, Utah — BYU head football coach Kalani Sitake today announced the hiring of Ty Detmer as offensive coordinator and Ilaisa Tuiaki as defensive coordinator.

“It’s an honor to announce Ty Detmer and Ilaisa Tuiaki as the offensive and defensive coordinators on our coaching staff at BYU,” Sitake said. “Each has an exceptional football mind and a real passion to help our young men succeed on and off the football field.  I am looking forward to working with them as we complete our staff and prepare our team for the 2016 season.”

Detmer and Tuiaki (pronounced ee-lye-sah too-ee-ah-kee) both have roots in Provo with Detmer having played football for the Cougars while Tuiaki grew up just down the street from LaVell Edwards Stadium.

A member of the College Football Hall of Fame, Detmer played quarterback for the Cougars from 1987-1991 and returns to his alma mater as one of the most heralded players in school history. Detmer won the Heisman Trophy in 1990 and holds BYU career records for passing yards, touchdowns and total offense among others.  Playing under LaVell Edwards, Detmer threw for 15,031 passing yards, which currently ranks fifth in NCAA history. His 121 career touchdown passes is tied for seventh in the NCAA record books. The recipient of the Maxwell Award and Sammy Baugh Trophy, Detmer was also a two-time Davey O’Brien Award winner and consensus All-American in 1990 and 1991 as the nation’s top quarterback.

Following his BYU playing days he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers and went on to enjoy a 14-year NFL career with five different teams. Detmer totaled 6,351 yards and 35 touchdowns in 54 games while also helping mentor many quarterback teammates over the course of NFL career. Detmer enters the college coaching ranks after having served the past six seasons as the head coach at St. Andrew's Episcopal, a private high school in southwest Austin, Texas.

A 1991 graduate of BYU in recreation administration, Detmer is married to the former Kim Herbert and they have four daughters, Kaili, Aubri, Mayci, and Rylli.

“My family and I are extremely excited to be part of the football program at BYU again,” Detmer said. “I feel it is the right time to make a move and jump in head first. I couldn’t be more excited.”

Tuiaki joins the BYU staff from Oregon State where he coached linebackers and was the special teams coordinator in 2015. The Provo native brings eight years of college coaching experience mentoring linebackers, defensive linemen, tight ends and running backs during stops at Oregon State, Utah and Utah State.  Tuiaki was a 2013 nominee for the Broyles Award for the nation’s top assistant coach—the only non-coordinator to receive such recognition, and was a 2014 top-five finalist for the Football Scoop Defensive Line Coach of the Year honor.

Tuiaki coached four Pac-12 postseason honorees at Utah, including first teamers Nate Orchard in 2014 and Trevor Reilly in 2013. Orchard was also named the Morris Trophy recipient as the Pac-12’s top lineman and the nation’s top defensive end by winning the Ted Hendricks Award. Under Tuiaki’s watch, Utah led the nation in overall sacks in 2014 with 55 and ranked second in sacks per game in 2013 at 3.25. At Utah State, Tuiaki served as the running backs coach and special teams and recruiting coordinator from 2009-11. He helped the Aggies finished sixth nationally in rushing (282.7 yards per game) and running back Robert Turbin was named the 2011 WAC Offensive Player of the Year, rushing for 1,517 yards and a school-record 19 touchdowns. Two Utah State running backs were drafted during Tuiaki’s time as the position coach, including Turbin and Michael Smith.

A 2006 graduate of Southern Utah University, Tuiaki was a two-year letterman at running back and a team captain at SUU after transferring from Snow College.  He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the New York, New York South Mission from 1998-2000. Tuiaki and his wife Viola have six children, sons Laveatu’u, Lolo and Hilamani, and daughters Uini, Leisinia and Heilala.

“I am excited to be back home,” Tuiaki said. “I’ve always been a fan and tied to the BYU program growing up just down the street from the stadium. I’m grateful to the Oregon State family and for Coach Andersen and everything he’s done for my career. I am really looking forward to this new opportunity to work with Kalani and help the great young men at BYU reach their goals.”

Specific position responsibilities will be announced at a later time along with additional staff members.

Ty Detmer—Offensive Coordinator

  • Ty Detmer is one of the most heralded players in BYU history, winning the Heisman in 1990 and holding school career records for passing yards, touchdowns and total offense among several other records. Detmer was a two-time consensus All-American, two-time winner of the Davey O’Brien Award and also won the Maxwell Award and Sammy Baugh Trophy.

  • Following his NFL career, Detmer has been coaching Texas high school football at St. Andrews Episcopal School near Austin, Texas. Detmer took over the small private high school program in Texas and led the team to its best season to date in 2015 with an 8-1 record, turning around a winless team as St. Andrews has improved in the win column each season under Detmer from three, four, five and now to eight wins most recently. His 2015 squad outscored opponents 43.4 to 10.2 this season.
  • The Green Bay Packers drafted Detmer in the ninth round of the 1992 NFL draft where he spent four years as the backup to Brett Favre. He then signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1996.

  • The Cleveland Browns wanted Detmer to mentor rookie Tim Couch in 1999. The veteran started two games before missing the 2000 season due to injury.
  • Detmer’s NFL career continued with the Detroit Lions for three seasons from 2001-03, and then he moved on to the Atlanta Falcons where he mentored Michael Vick and Matt Schaub.
  • During his 14-year career, Detmer played in 54 games and totaled 6,351 yards passing and 35 touchdowns.
  • Playing under LaVell Edwards at BYU from 1987-91, Detmer threw for 15,031 passing yards, which currently ranks fifth in NCAA history. His 121 career touchdown passes is tied for seventh in the NCAA record books.

He threw for 406 yards and three touchdowns in the historic victory.
