PROVO, Utah – BYU football fall camp continued Wednesday with both sides of the ball getting some big plays.

In 11-on-11 drills, quarterback Taysom Hill connected with receiver Nick Kurtz for a 50-yard pass prior to Algernon Brown’s 20-yard run up the left side for a touchdown. Immediately following the run, Hill then hit a speedy Mitchell Juergens for a 72-yard pass down field for another touchdown on the first play on the next drive. Newcomer quarterback Koy Detmer Jr. also found receiver Rickey Shumway in the end zone for a 20-yard score.

The defense came up with some stops in pass coverage with Eric Takenaka and Michael Davis getting pass breakups. Kai Nacua also had a whistle sack. The defense continued to battle as Mike Wadsworth and Morgan Unga both notched pass breakups while Harvey Langi recovered a fumble.

Fans will have the opportunity to watch the Cougars as they scrimmage on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

QUOTES

Taysom Hill:

On the running backs:
“Algie and Adam and Nate have stepped up and they’re very capable backs. We’ll be very capable of running the football this year.”

On Coach Mendenhall:
“One major difference this year that I have noticed is that Bronco is giving more to us as players to be the leaders of the team. He lets us do what we think is best and lets us run the drills and put ourselves through different things. It’s really good to know that he trusts us from a leadership standpoint and that's been the major difference this year.”

On his mindset playing QB:
“As long as I’m playing QB, my mindset will be making great decisions and getting the ball out on time. If I’m making the right decisions, then the defense can do what they want, it doesn’t matter, but whatever they do they will be wrong.”

Fred Warner:

On losing Colby:
“It hurts a lot. He’s a big part of our team and he was moving his way up the depth chart so to see that happen, especially when it’s a neck injury, it’s hard to see.”

How’s the defense after the first week?

“Overall we’ve been working really hard. Assignment and execution wise we’re still a little off, but that’s to be expected in the first week. "

Bronco Mendenhall:

“I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen. It’s certainly still a work in progress. The next target for a big practice will be Saturday’s scrimmage.”

On Harvey Langi:
“Effort is great. Leadership is strong. The diagnosing of the plays and the consistency, there’s still a lot of conscious thought that has to go into the progression of what’s happening rather than just instinctual. More repetition needed, but he’s sure working hard.”

On Jordan Preator and other cornerbacks:
“Steps positively every day. I like the way he’s playing. Maybe even more impressive right now is Michael Davis. He’s done a really nice job. And Michael Shelton. Between those three, because Micah Hannemann hasn’t practiced yet, I like what I’ve seen from all three of them.”
