PROVO, Utah – BYU football conducted its second session of fall camp Monday morning with an open practice in front of fans at the Student Athlete Building practice fields.

“It was a good practice today,” BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. “In particular, I’m really impressed with our in-state freshmen talent. I am sure I’m missing someone but I really like Dayan Lake, Riley Burt, Zayne Anderson and Moroni Laulu-Pututau.”

The defense shined first during 11-on-11 scrimmages when the first-team offense went against the first-team defense. Four plays during the first couple possessions were blown dead when Bronson Kaufusi and other defensive players got into the backfield before quarterback Taysom Hill could find an open target.

Later on in the practice, the offense responded when Taysom Hill found a streaking Devon Blackmon down the sideline for a 50-yard touchdown completion. A few plays later, Hill made the defense bite on a short route with a pump fake, then connected with Nick Kurtz for another 50-yard touchdown along the sideline.

Tanner Mangum put together a few nice drives of his own hitting Rickey Shumway and Kurt Henderson for a pair of 30-yard completions. Shumway and Henderson reeled in a handful of passes with the second-string offense.

Algernon Brown and Nate Carter continued to take first-team repetitions at running back and caught a few passes for short gains out of the backfield.

"I’m really happy with how the team has come together,” Nate Carter said. “Our mentality is different, the whole team is more ready for camp this season.”

Fall camp continues Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. and will be open to the public.
