Participants in Pro Day included 15 players from the 2014 BYU football team with two former Cougars from past years. From the 2014 team defensive backs Robertson Daniel, Craig Bills, Harvey Jackson and Skye PoVey, receivers Ross Apo and Jordan Leslie, offensive linemen Solomone Kafu, Edward Fusi and De’Ondre Wesley, running back Paul Lasike, tight end Devin Mahina, punter Scott Arellano, linebacker Alani Fua and deep snapper Kevin O’Mary all competed.

Former BYU linebacker Uona Kavenga (2012-13) also participated along with former NFL and Cougar linebacker Bryan Kehl (2002, 05-07) who is making a comeback to the league after a torn ACL sidelined him in 2012.

Former 2014 BYU quarterback Christian Stewart also participated, throwing to the receivers and tight end.

Participants displayed their abilities in the vertical jump, broad jump, bench press, 40-yard dash, 20- and 60-yard shuttle runs, the three-cone drill and position drills.

Four players recorded at least 35 inches in the vertical jump with PoVey’s 37 leading the way followed by Apo (36.5), Leslie (36) and Daniel (35.5). In the broad jump Apo registered the top mark with 11 feet 2 inches with Leslie at 10 feet 2 inches.

Daniel and Mahina led the skill players at the bench press with 24 and 23 reps, respectively. Daniel also showed his speed with a 4.45 40-yard dash with Leslie turning in a time of 4.46.

Fua, the outside linebacker out of San Fernando Valley, California, took the opportunity at Pro Day to improve upon his showing at the NFL combine in February. He upped his mark on the broad jump from 118 inches to 119 before increasing his reps on the bench press from 18 to 20. Fua also cut time off his 40-yard dash, decreasing it from 4.73 to 4.59.

In the position-specific drills, scouts worked one-on-one first with the defensive backs and linebackers. Stewart then threw to the running back, receivers and tight end, and linemen took part in other drills.

The punter Arellano demonstrated his abilities on special teams as deep snapper O’Mary snapped numerous balls to him. Arellano impressed with his mechanics and athleticism, punting several downfield with a roughly 70-yard punt along with other punts that were halted by the rafters in the indoor practice facility.

The 2015 NFL Draft runs Thursday, April 30 through Saturday, May 2. The first round will be broadcast live from Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on ESPN
