PROVO, Utah (March 20, 2015) — Brigham Young University and Mississippi State University today announced the schools have agreed to a two-game football series in 2016 and 2017. The teams will meet at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Oct. 15, 2016, with a second game being played at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi, on Oct. 14, 2017.

“It’s a great opportunity for our football team to play a very good SEC program,” said BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe. “It’s been more than a decade since we played Mississippi State, and we are excited to have them back on our schedule. Visiting Starkville will be a great experience for our football program and our fans, and we look forward to hosting the Bulldogs in Provo.”

BYU and Mississippi State have previously played twice in football, with the series tied 1-1. The Cougars lost to the Bulldogs 44-28 at home in 2000 before winning the following year 41-38 in Starkville on Dec. 1, 2001. The 2001 contest was moved to the end of the season due to the events of 9/11 earlier that year.

Mississippi State was founded in 1878 and began playing football in 1895. The Bulldogs are members of the Southeastern Conference. MSU has played in 18 bowl games and has won two SEC football titles.

BYU was founded in 1875 and played its first season of intercollegiate football in 1922. The Cougars won the 1984 national championship, have appeared in 33 bowl games and have captured 23 conference football titles.

Kickoff times and broadcast plans for the series will be announced at a later date.
