BYU's Stout, Arellano named FBS Independent Players of the Week

FOOTBALL BOWL SUBDIVISION INDEPENDENT PLAYERS OF THE WEEK NAMED

Army running back Larry Dixon, BYU linebacker Zac Stout and BYU punter Scott Arellano have been named FBS Independent Players of the Week, for the week ending on Saturday, Nov. 22. Dixon is cited on Offense, Stout is recognized on Defense, and Arellano is honored on Special Teams. It is Arellano’s fifth career honor, while Dixon is recognized for a second time. Stout is a first-time honoree.

The FBS Independent Players of the Week are selected by members of a nationwide media panel, which includes equal representation from each of the independent institutions’ coverage markets.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BYU LB Zac Stout

A senior from Moorpark, Calif., Stout totaled five tackles including a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and his first career forced fumble, in BYU’s 64-0 win over Savannah State, giving BYU its largest margin of victory in a shutout since a 65-0 decision over New Mexico in 1988. Stout helped the Cougar defense hold the Tigers to 63 yards of total offense—the lowest total allowed in BYU football history; the previous low was recorded in 1951, when Western Michigan was held to 66 yards.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BYU P Scott Arellano

A senior from Santa Ynez, Calif., Arellano averaged 51.5 yards per punt on two kicks in BYU’s 64-0 home win over Savannah State. Arellano’s long kick of the day traveled 61 yards and was downed at the Tiger 4-yard line; on the season, it was his 23rd inside-the-20 punt, and 19th kick of at least 50 yards. Arellano stands 12th among FBS punters, averaging 44.6 yards/punt, helping BYU rank 11th in net punting. Arellano is a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award awarded annually to the nation's top punter.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Army RB Larry Dixon

A senior from Bremerton, Wash., Dixon ran for a game-high 158 yards and three touchdowns in Army’s 42-31 win over Fordham. Dixon has topped 100 yards rushing yards four times this season, and now has 11 career century-mark games, tied for third in Academy history. For the season, Dixon has 1,025 yards rushing, and is the third member of the current squad to hit the thousand-yard plateau. Dixon became the fourth player in Academy history to reach 3,000 rushing yards in his career, and he now has 26 career rushing touchdowns, which ties him with Heisman Trophy winner Felix “Doc” Blanchard for sixth all time. Dixon’s 36 career starts are more than any other player on the squad.
