PROVO, Utah – BYU deep snapper Kevin O’Mary was named Capital One Academic All-District 8 Thursday.

O’Mary, a native of San Diego, California, is one of 24 District 8 selections for the honor. The 6-foot-4 graduate student finished his undergraduate degree in exercise science with a 3.71 GPA. He has been taking graduate classes this semester while applying to medical school.

A starting deep snapper for the past two seasons, O’Mary has never botched a snap. With his help, BYU punter Scott Arellano has recorded 2,108 yards punting and four games with three or more 50+ yard punts. He also snapped the ball to Arellano on his record-setting 81-yard punt against Middle Tennessee.

The Capital One Academic All-District ® teams include the student-athletes divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.

To be eligible for Capital One Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

(NOTE: O’Mary was selected in the offensive linemen category since there is not a separate category for deep snappers.)
