PROVO, Utah—The Walter Camp Foundation named BYU quarterback Taysom Hill to its 2014 Walter Camp Player of the Year Watch List Friday.

Hill is one of 50 candidates for the award, which is the nation’s fourth-oldest college football honor. The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November.  The 2014 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 125 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN SportsCenter on Dec. 11.

Hill, a junior from Poctaello, Idaho, was named the 2013 College Sports Madness Independent Offensive Player of the Year after recording 2,938 passing yards and 1,344 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns. He finished second only to the 1990 Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer in total offensive yards by a BYU sophomore quarterback.

So far, Hill has been named to watch lists for the Heisman Trophy (two lists), the Maxwell Award, College Football Performance Awards Quarterback Trophy, Davey O’Brien Award and Allstate AFCA Good Works. He was also named Phil Steele Preseason All-Independent First Team, Sporting News Top 25 and a Touchdown Club of Columbus Player to Watch.

“Father of American football” Walter Camp first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to 11 men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation (www.waltercamp.org; @WalterCampFF) – a New Haven-based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate Camp’s ideals and to continue the tradition of selecting an All-America team annually.
