PROVO, Utah — BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall today announced the hiring of Zach Nyborg as director of football operations.

“Zach is an individual of high moral values and character who brings experience, knowledge and innovative thinking to a position that is of utmost importance to a football program,” Mendenhall said. “He will play a significant role in the continued success of our program.”

Nyborg comes to BYU from the University of Wisconsin, where he is in his second season as the director of football operations for the Badgers after spending the previous three seasons at Utah State University.

“I am ready to get to work and excited to be a part of the BYU football family,” Nyborg said. “This is the right fit for me, and I am grateful to Coach Mendenhall and Tom Holmoe for the opportunity to be a part of the great tradition of BYU football and to begin building relationships with the players, coaches and staff.”

Nyborg has served under Wisconsin head coach Gary Andersen during his time at both Wisconsin and Utah State. Among his duties at Wisconsin, Nyborg was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program, handling team logistics, team schedules, team travel, practice preparation, overseeing the football budget as well as supervising the Badgers’ recruiting and support staff.

“I would not be here today without Coach Andersen,” Nyborg offered. “He has been a father figure, true friend and a tremendous mentor and leader that has given me every opportunity to succeed. The Andersen family is family to me. I am grateful to Coach Andersen, the staffs at Wisconsin and Utah State and their families for letting me be a part of their football family and for the special moments we have shared.”

Prior to Wisconsin, Nyborg worked three years at Utah State in roles as the assistant to the head coach, recruiting coordinator and as a graduate assistant. In addition to servingas Coach Andersen's assistant in the daily operations of the Utah State football program, Nyborg had responsibilities that included recruiting administration, organization, managing all official and unofficial visits, creating all outgoing recruiting campaigns, tracking all recruiting paperwork and serving as the summer camp director for the youth and high school camps.

He served the 2012 season with the Aggies as assistant to the head coach, recruiting coordinator and offensive graduate assistant, working specifically with the quarterbacks. He worked the 2011 season as a defensive and recruiting administrative assistant after starting at Utah State in 2010 as an offensive, special teams and recruiting administrative assistant.

Prior to his time at Utah State, Nyborg coached at Timpview High School in Provo, Utah. He served as the team's head freshman coach and offensive coordinator, in addition to working with the quarterbacks and receivers on the sophomore team.

A Cougar alumnus, Nyborg graduated from BYU’s Marriott School of Management with a bachelor’s degree in business management in 2011 and is currently completing a master’s in physical and sport education from Utah State. The Centerville, Utah, native was a three-sport athlete at Viewmont High School, lettering in football, basketball and track & field, prior to serving as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Knoxville, Tenn., from 2006-08.

“To be able to join the BYU football program, work with Coach Mendenhall and come home is an opportunity that I could not pass up,” Nyborg explained. “I look forward to contributing to the mission of BYU football in being flag bearers of Brigham Young University by helping change young men into men through academic, social, spiritual and athletic excellence. I hope to be able to use my sphere of influence to help make a difference and help the program get to an elite level of competition in the current world of college football while adhering to the core values and mission of BYU football, Brigham Young University and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”
