Day 2 of spring practice

PROVO, Utah - The second spring practice is in the books for BYU after a long, emotional afternoon of football.

"The team was anxious to fly around and really anxious to compete," head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "They like football. I think they're tough; I think they're physical. I was really impressed with our practice."

Just as in Monday's practice, the team rotated between individual and position drills for the first part of the afternoon. Players wore helmets, jerseys and shorts but no pads. The last few segments were dedicated to 7-on-7 and a final 11-on-11 team session.

During the 7-on-7, sophomore speedster Michael Davis hauled in a touchdown pass. Shortly after, Davis sprained an ankle and missed the last portion of practice.

Quarterback Taysom Hill connected with receiver Kurt Henderson for a 50-yard play during the 11-on-11 session. Cornerback Trent Trammell also contributed a big play on defense, as he broke up a long pass intended for receiver Nick Kurtz. On the next play, he also disrupted a short throw to stop the offense from converting a first down.

"I really like to see players who didn't play much last year and assess where they are," Mendenhall said of analyzing spring practices. "I like to see schematic things that we think are going to help us improve from where we were last season."

Towards the end of practice, converted linebacker Bronson Kaufusi made his presence felt as he used hits tall frame to bat down a pass at the line of scrimmage.

The players will review film and conduct conditioning workouts on Thursday before practicing again on Friday afternoon.
