BYU ranks No. 7 in team performance index

PROVO, Utah – For the first week of the 2013 season, BYU football ranked among the top 10 in the UPS Team Performance Index (TPI). 

The Cougars, behind an up-tempo offense which has sparked the team to five straight wins, has jumped eight spots and landed at No. 7 in the TPI, the lone new team in the top 10 this week. Unbeaten Florida State remains No. 1, with both Oregon and Alabama close behind for the week beginning October 28. No. 4 Ohio State and Stanford round out the top five of the UPS TPI.

Team Highlights

BYU (6-2) has had its fair share of big-time wins this season – a 40-21 rout of Texas, as well as dominant victories over Utah State (34-17) and Georgia Tech (38-20)—leading into Friday night’s 37-20 pounding of Boise State that thrust the Cougars into the top 10 of the TPI . Following this week’s off week, the team will prep for a road game at Wisconsin, which boasts an offense (129.23 TPI) and defense (120.99 TPI) both rated sixth overall in the country.

Florida State (7-0, 136.27 TPI) remained atop the UPS TPI after its dominating 51-14 win over NC State this weekend, a balanced performance that also kept the team’s offense (141.69 TPI, second overall) and defense (125.26 TPI, fourth overall) rated among the nation’s top teams in each category according to the TPI data.

The statistical components of the UPS TPI

• Offense (Yards/play)
• Special Teams (combination of six categories - punt returns, opponent punt returns, kickoff returns, opponent kickoff returns, punting, field goal percentage)
• Miscues (combination of four categories - penalty yards, opponent penalty yards, turnovers, opponent turnovers).
• Quality of Opponent (based on each opponent’s TPI rating)

For each of the five components, an Index value is created using a proprietary algorithm, with 100 being average.  For all categories, anything above 100 is better than average and anything below 100 is below average. The maximum component index is capped at 200 in any category. These components, and the team’s win-loss performance, then are combined to reward a team that excels in all facets of the game.
