BYU announces football games with Stanford, Hawai’i and Savannah State

PROVO, Utah — Brigham Young University director of athletics Tom Holmoe today announced the addition of three new opponents to future football schedules.

The Cougars have finalized a four-game series with Stanford University of the Pac-12 beginning in 2020 and concluding in 2025. The dates of the series include two games on Thanksgiving weekend at Stanford Stadium on Nov. 28, 2020, and Nov. 26, 2022. The Cardinal will then visit LaVell Edwards Stadium on Sept. 2, 2023, and Sept. 13, 2025.

BYU and Stanford have met just twice in football. The Cardinal defeated the Cougars 18-14 in Provo on Sept. 20, 2003, and won again the following year 37-10 at Stanford on Sept. 11, 2004.

BYU has renewed its rivalry with the University of Hawai’i of the Mountain West Conference by signing a two-year deal, with games scheduled for Nov. 25, 2017, at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu and Nov. 17, 2018, at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo.

The rivalry between Hawai’i and BYU goes back more than 80 years. The teams first met on Dec. 10, 1930, in Honolulu, with Hawai’i defeating BYU 49-13. From 1979 to 1999 the Cougars and Rainbow Warriors played regularly as members of the Western Athletic Conference. BYU and Hawai’i have played 29 times over the years, with the Cougars winning the last contest 47-0 on Sept. 28, 2012, in Provo. BYU leads the overall series 21-8.

Savannah State will travel to Provo on Nov. 22, 2014, to take on the Cougars in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Tigers, located in Savannah, Ga., belong to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

BYU was founded in 1875 and played its first season of intercollegiate football in 1922. The Cougars have produced 72 All-Americans and have appeared in 31 bowl games. Since 1972 when hall of fame coach LaVell Edwards took over the program, BYU ranks No. 5 in total victories among all FBS schools.

Kickoff times and broadcast plans for the various games will be announced at a later date.
