FOOTBALL BOWL SUBDIVISION INDEPENDENT PLAYERS OF THE WEEK NAMED

BYU linebacker Kyle Van Noy and Idaho quarterback Chad Chalich and placekicker/punter Austin Rehkow have been named FBS Independent Players of the Week for games played through Saturday, Sept. 28.

Van Noy is recognized on Defense, Chalich is the honoree on Offense and Rehkow is cited on Special Teams.  Chalich and Rehkow are honored for the first time in their careers, while Van Noy’s first recognition in 2013 is the fourth of his career.

The FBS Independent Players of the Week are selected by members of a nationwide media panel, which includes equal representation from each of the independent institutions’ coverage markets.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

BYU LB Kyle Van Noy

A senior from Reno, Nev., Van Noy spearheaded a stifling BYU defense in the Cougars’ 37-10 win over Middle Tennessee in Provo.  Van Noy recorded seven tackles, including a tackle for loss, while adding a pass breakup, quarterback hurry and momentum-swinging safety.  Van Noy helped BYU limit the Blue Raiders to 212 yards in total offense.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Idaho QB Chad Chalich

A redshirt freshman from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Chalich completed 26 of 43 passes for 310 yards and one touchdown, while rushing 14 times for 114 yards, as Idaho defeated Temple 26-24 in Moscow.  Chalich recorded career highs in pass attempts, completions, passing yards and rushing yards; his century-mark rush effort was the first by an Idaho quarterback since Nov. 20, 1993.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Idaho PK/P Austin Rehkow

A freshman from Spokane, Wash. and one of only two FBS players who serves as his team’s primary placekicker and punter, Rehkow connected on four of five field goals (from 25, 30, 38, 39 yards) as well as both PAT attempts, in Idaho’s 26-24 home-field win over Temple.  Rehkow also averaged 45.9 yards on seven punts with a long of 59 yards, placing four punts inside the 20-yard line; he added four touchbacks on seven kickoffs.
