PROVO, Utah — In a ceremony today featuring former All-American quarterback Robbie Bosco, BYU Athletics unveiled an original mural at LaVell Edwards Stadium just outside the football locker room. Created by Southern California based sports artist, Mike Sullivan, the 12x9-foot artwork is part of a series of 25 large-scale murals being installed at many of the storied football stadiums across the country.

The artwork will later be published in a full color coffee table book. Each mural will be featured as a chapter of the book with additional information about the stadium and the history of the university.

“BYU has such a rich history of football success that it’s truly an honor for me to have this mural displayed at LaVell Edwards Stadium,” said Sullivan. "I hope the mural will serve as a tribute to Cougar football past, present and future."

Previously Sullivan has installed murals at Notre Dame Stadium, Texas Memorial Stadium, Sun Devil Stadium (ASU) and the Los Angeles Coliseum (USC).

“It’s an honor for us to be included as one of the storied football stadiums that will feature one of Mike Sullivan’s original murals,” said Chad Lewis, BYU director of athletic development. “It will be a symbol of the tradition of excellence at BYU and serve as a great backdrop where fans can come and take photos on game days.”

The Mural Process

Sullivan sketches all of his murals in pencil before painting the final version on a signature black background. Using bright acrylic colors, sharp lines and specific angles, Sullivan brings his sports subjects alive. The paintings are then digitally transferred to high-gloss, reinforced 12x12-inch tiles used to create the mural.
