Second day of fall camp

PROVO, Utah - The BYU football team returned to the practice field with increased tempo and physicality on day two of fall camp Monday afternoon.

"Overall it was cleaner today, a little more physical even though we weren't in pads," head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "I thought the tempo was even faster than it was on Saturday and the players handled that much better. As is usually the case when you watch film and make a few corrections, execution improves and that is what I saw today."

The second practice consisted of individual, team and special team sessions with more contact encouraged from the players. With increased tempo, players on both sides of the ball made big plays.

The defense found its stride in the first team session as linebackers Trajan Pili and Jherremya Leuta-Douyere picked up fumbles. The rest of the defense made a lot of hustle plays in the back field sniffing out run plays and breaking up passes downfield.

During the 7-on-7 series, wide out Skyler Ridley made a diving catch on a go route down the sideline for a 35-yard gain.

Practice ended with an 11-on-11 team session. On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Tyler Beck and defensive lineman Marques Johnson both registered "whistle" sacks and defensive back Dallin Leavitt had a fumble recovery. On the second drive, quarterback Ammon Olsen found receiver Ross Apo for a 25-yard completion and running back Paul Lasike ran it in from four yards out for a touchdown. Apo made a highlight-reel catch on the final play of practice, hauling in a 35-yard diving touchdown to end the day.

Fall camp resumes Tuesday morning with players donning shoulder pads for the first time this fall.
