PROVO, Utah – BYU’s first practice of the 2013 fall camp is in the books and the team seemed well prepared as players practiced in the heat of Saturday afternoon.

“That was a long, hard practice,” head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. “I was impressed they could sustain the pace but we still need to work on execution.”

The team, wearing helmets only for the first day, kicked off practice in individual position groups. The Cougars also spent time doing stretching and conditioning drill, and in special teams.

The team later worked on passing plays during 7-on-7 where defensive back Skye Povey picked off a ball. In a later series, running back Adam Hine logged a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ammon Olsen.

Day 1 Highlights

Various 11-on-11 team segments were scattered throughout practice. Defensive back Daniel Sorensen was quick to make waves on defense with an interception on the opening drive. Defensive back Jordan Johnson continued to give the defense momentum with a pass breakup in the end zone. Defensive lineman Remington Peck hustled for two whistle sacks.

Wide receiver Mitch Mathews put the offense on the board when he hauled down a one-handed grab for a 20-yard touchdown from Olsen.

In the final drive of practice, quarterback Taysom Hill hit wideout JD Falslev for a gain of 20 yards. Hill followed it up with a 45-yard toss to receiver Skyler Ridley who made a diving catch.

“You can tell the guys did their due diligence over the summer,” offensive coordinator Robert Anae said. “The majority of the guys were right on the money with going fast and hard.”

The Cougars resume practice Monday afternoon.
