BYU, Bronco Mendenhall agree to contract extension through 2016 season

PROVO, Utah (June 26, 2013) – BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe today announced that head football coach Bronco Mendenhall has signed a new agreement that extends his contract through the 2016 season.  

“I am thrilled to have Bronco signed as our head football coach through the 2016 season,” said BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe. “Over the past eight seasons, his leadership has guided our football program back to national prominence through top-25 rankings, bowl victories, All-American athletes and overall excitement at LaVell Edwards Stadium. I look forward to what the next four years will bring with the new era of BYU football.”

Under Mendenhall’s leadership, BYU has earned a 74-29 (.718) record to rank No. 12 in total wins in the nation since 2005. After taking over a program coming off three-straight losing seasons, Mendenhall has guided the Cougars to eight-consecutive bowl invitations and a 6-2 bowl record. Mendenhall has led BYU to a school-record four-straight bowl wins while helping the Cougars become one of only seven programs to win six bowl games since 2005.   

“BYU is a special place and this is a special time,” Mendenhall said. “I’m excited to build on the success of our program over past eight years, and I think there's much more that we can accomplish at BYU.”

BYU’s success under Mendenhall is also evident in national rankings and NCAA statistics. The Cougars have been ranked in the top-25 polls during seven of the past eight seasons and have finished the year nationally ranked five times. BYU has also finished ranked in the top 25 in the various national statistical categories 127 times in the past eight years, including 78 top-15 statistical rankings, 58 top-10 rankings and 27 top-5 rankings, including last year’s No. 3-ranked defense.

Another hallmark of Mendenhall’s successful program has been the emphasis on balance and priorities in the many facets of life outside of football. Reflecting that emphasis, BYU has led all FBS programs in National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society selections three of the past four seasons. With seven Academic All-America honorees over Mendenhall’s first eight seasons, only three FBS programs have had more selections than BYU.
