Creighton 2, BYU Baseball 0
OMAHA, Neb.—Creighton defeated BYU baseball, 2-0, Tuesday night at TR Ameritrade Ballpark, site of this year’s College World Series.
The game, which lasted one hour and 59 minutes, ended up being a pitchers’ duel before a season-high 3,153 fans. The Blue Jays improved their record to 8-6, while BYU fell to 6-7.
Six Creighton hurlers combined for eight strikeouts, while BYU’s Desmond Poulson struck out six. Poulson battled each of his seven innings with Blue Jays on base and was relieved by Mason Marshall, who put Creighton down in order in the eighth.
"Desmond absolutely pitched great, its a shame he had to take a loss," said BYU coach Vance Law. "We have not been able to put our offense, defense and pitching together all at the same time. It was tough for our hitters to get a feel for what they were doing because they changed pitchers so often."
BYU’s best offensive threat came in the fourth inning when Jaycob Brugman led off with a single, stole second and advance to third on an error with one out.
Brugman picked up another of BYU’s five singles in the ninth with one out, while Tanner Chauncey led off the game with a single, Brock Whitney led off with a single in the seventh and Wes Guenther singled up the middle with one out in the eighth.
Next up for BYU is Seattle University this Saturday afternoon when the Cougars start their home season.
