Baseball Season Less Than a Month Away

In less than a month, BYU's baseball team begins playing games for the 2012 season.

BYU begins full workouts on Jan. 27 when the Cougars can practice two hours a day. NCAA rules have limited teams to individual skill instruction the past two weeks.

“I like our focus and how we have competed,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “Our 'plus one' slogan has been a good motivator for everyone giving extra effort. We need to continue to sharpen up and get our pitchers back in shape.”

During the recent Martin Luther King holiday, BYU had a full hour of defensive practice at the Indoor Practice Facility.

First on BYU’s schedule is a three-game series at UC-Riverside with a double header on Feb. 17. That double header is the only twin bill on the schedule and will match BYU against former Cougar pitching coach Bobby Applegate.

Another highlight on the schedule, which includes BYU’s debut in the West Coast Conference, is a two-game series at No. 8 Arkansas. The WCC season begins in a three-game series on Feb. 23 at St. Mary’s College and will be broadcast live over BYU radio with Brent Norton. The first home game is on Mar. 17 vs. Seattle University.

Law said senior co-captain Alex Wolfe has returned to catching duties after an elbow injury last fall and is progressing in just starting to throw.
