Neil, Cole Drafted in 29th Round
Pitchers Matthew Neil (Florida, 883) and Taylor Cole (Toronto, 889) of BYU were selected in 29th round of Tuesday's Major League draft.
Neil, a senior from Mesa, Ariz., compiled a 6-4 record with a 2.42 earned run average and 73 strikeouts. He was named national pitcher of the week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com and the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week for his 2-0 record, a 0.00 ERA in two appearances in one-run victories over Utah and New Mexico in 11 scoreless innings
Neil was Second-Team All-Mountain West Conference, All-Tourney in the Brooks Wallace Classic hosted by Texas Tech, had 10 games when he did not walk a batter, earned saves at Texas Tech, at Pepperdine and against Utah Valley, and had a 4-1 record with a 1.67 ERA in seven league games.
Cole, a sophomore from Las Vegas, tallied a 5-5 record, a 2.99 ERA and 67 strikeouts. He was All-Tourney in the Brooks Wallace Classic hosted by Texas Tech. His final win of the 2011 season was against his former coach and hometown UNLV when he threw 103 pitches in 7.2 innings.
Cole registered a career-high 10 strikeouts in 7.1 innings vs. Utah in Salt Lake City and had one inning of relief at No. 6 Arizona State.
