Walk-off Single Gives SDSU 2-1 Win

SAN DIEGO -- Extra innings escaped BYU baseball’s grasp with a walk-off single that led to a 2-1 victory by San Diego State on Friday.

The Cougars, now 25-24 overall and 7-11 in the Mountain West Conference, took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning.

That BYU lead came in the eighth when Dane Nielsen singled with one out to left field, then advanced to third on Jaycob Brugman’s double to deep right field on the first offering. Ryan Bernal then hit deep enough to left field for a sacrifice fly to score Nielsen for a 1-0 lead.

“This was one of our tougher losses we have had all year, Taylor (Cole) pitched outstanding,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “He breezed through the eighth, then unfortunately we gave up back-to-back doubles. It’s tough to swallow because we had a real shot to win it.”

Cole gave up just two hits through six innings and was tagged with his fifth loss of the season. Cole got good defensive support and his teammates narrowly missed getting more runs.

In the third, BYU centerfielder Stephen Wells hit a one-out triple just inside the first base bag, then it scooted into foul territory. But Wells was stranded when Brugman’s line drive up the middle was handled on a shoestring catch by the Aztec shortstop.

Double plays in the bottom of the third and sixth and a leaping, diving catch by Nielsen to end the fourth with runners on second and third ended Aztec threats.

The finale of the three-game series is Saturday afternoon.
