Anderson Deals Zags a Loss

PROVO, Utah -- In the final home game of the season, the BYU battery of Mark Anderson and Alex Wolfe led the Cougars to a 4-3 win over Gonzaga.

“I thought our defense was exceptional tonight,” head coach Vance Law said. “We made some great plays and the defense helped spark our offense. When a pitcher is throwing strikes like Mark (Anderson) it can really encourage the offense.”

In his 10th appearance of the season Anderson pitched 8.1 innings, struck out five and allowed three runs to improve his record to 3-2. Anderson allowed just one run until the top of the ninth when the Bulldogs added two more.

Wolfe had his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field in the second inning. He recorded two more RBI with a line drive double to right field in the sixth that extended the BYU lead to 4-1.

Gonzaga tried to get something going in the top half of the third but BYU put an end to the rally with an impressive 3-6-1 double play that featured Anderson hustling to first to finish the play.

In the fourth the Zags were able to tie the game up with an RBI double from Cameron Edman but failed to break the game open. Andrew Law threw out Royce Bolinger at home and Keegan Acker flew out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

BYU mounted a rally in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead. Dane Nielsen recorded an RBI single to start the scoring and Wolfe pushed the Cougars further ahead with his two-RBI double to right.

Anderson went for the complete game as he pitched into the ninth but quickly loaded the bases. After giving up a two RBI single to pinch hitter Clayton Eslick, Anderson took a seat in favor of Kolton Mahoney.

Mahoney entered the game with one out and two men on base with the Cougars nursing a 4-3 lead. Mahoney coaxed Eric Lane to hit into a double play, ending the game and earning his third save.

BYU improves to 25-22 overall, while Gonzaga is now 26-14-1.

BYU continues the season as it begins a three-game set at San Diego State on Thursday evening in a game that can be heard on Radio 960 AM and through live audio on the Internet on BYU radio.
