Cole, Bernal Lead to Victory Vs. Seattle

PROVO, Utah -- Pitching and season-best home runs led the BYU baseball team to a 13-3 victory against Seattle Friday at Larry H. Miller Field.

“I was really happy with the way our guys played,” BYU head coach Vance Law said. “There were three key at-bats that really exemplified the way I want our guys to play. With the emphasis we put on strikeouts, we’ve been trying to take some of the pressure off our pitchers.”

Pitcher Taylor Cole threw nine strikeouts for BYU (23-21). Usually the lead-off starter, Cole was switched to Day 2 starter for the Seattle series.

First baseman Ryan Bernal had four RBI to lead the Cougars and designated hitter Alex Wolfe had three RBI.

Seattle (18-23) put the first run on the board with a center-field homer from center fielder Josh Kutz at the top of the second. As first BYU batter of the inning, Wolfe answered for the Cougars with his own homer to tie the game.

Redhawk right fielder Doug Kincaid hit a dinger and batted in Trent Oleszczuk to put Seattle up 3-1 after Cole’s first strikeout of the game. The home run was Seattle’s last run of the game.

With right fielder Jaycob Brugman on second, Bernal singled up the middle and Brugman ran home. Wolfe sent the ball over the fence for his second homer of the game and another RBI, giving BYU its first lead of the game 4-3.

Cole struck out three batters in a row to start off the fourth, bringing his total to four.

Bernal hit a three-run homer to bring the score to 7-3, batting in second baseman Dane Nielsen and Brugman who were on first and second, respectively.

Cole started off the sixth with three more strikeouts to continue Seattle’s run-less streak. Third baseman Dillon Robinson went yard off reliever Eric Yardley at the bottom of the inning and center fielder Stephen Wells batted in Wes Guenther. Pinch hitter Brock Luker followed with a single to left field for one RBI and short stop Austin Hall finished the inning batting in Wells.

Scoring ended at the bottom of the seventh with pinch hitter Matt Crowder batting in Robinson and an error sending pinch hitter Chase Frampton home.

Seattle’s Kincaid had two RBI to lead the Redhawks.

A season-high 1,474 fans were in attendance for the victory.

BYU plays Seattle Saturday in the final game of the weekend’s tripleheader. BYU will honor its seniors prior to the 1 p.m. game at Larry H. Miller Field.
