Frampton, Capper Lead to Pepperdine Win

MALIBU, Calif. -- Pitcher Chris Capper and his designated hitter Chase Frampton combined to lead BYU to an 8-3 victory Friday at Pepperdine.

Capper gave up one unearned run in eight innings to even his record at 2-2, while Frampton went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI. The duo helped improve BYU’s record to 14-11, while the Waves are 13-13.

“Chris controlled the pace of the game, “ said BYU coach Vance Law. “Our execution was excellent and that is the mark of a good club.“

Capper got an early 1-0 cushion when Jaycob Brugman doubled off the right field wall to drive in Frampton, who singled to lead off the second.

“I felt great today,” said Capper. “I threw a lot of strikes and I felt comfortable."

Frampton delivered again in the third with a two-out single, this time to left field, to drive in Stephen Wells from second and put BYU up 2-0.

In the fifth, BYU picked up its third run when Dane Nielsen scored on a fielder’s choice from a possible double-play, inning-ending at bat by Ryan Bernal. Bernal took advantage of a pick-off overthrow error, scoring from second to lift BYU to a 4-1 advantage.

Wells scored all the way from first in the seventh on an overthrow error on Andrew Law’s single. Law scored on Frampton’s third single, then Frampton crossed the plate on Austin Hall’s triple to give the Cougars a 7-1 lead. Alex Wolfe then singled in Hall.

The Cougars meet Pepperdine Saturday afternoon to close the three-game series. That game can be heard on Radio 960 AM/92.9 FM.
