Law's Streak Continues in Split

PROVO -- BYU split a doubleheader with San Diego State Saturday afternoon at Miller Park with the Cougars taking the first game, 6-4, and the Aztecs claiming the second, 5-3.

The Cougars and Aztecs now both stand at 3-3 in Mountain West Conference play with BYU maintaining a 12-11 record overall and SDSU a 7-17 mark.

Highlights of the day include BYU shortstop Andrew Law extending his hitting streak to eight games with hits in both outings and a 4-for-4 hitting performance by Cougar third basemen Jaycob Brugman in the second game to complete a 5-for-7 day overall at the plate.

In the first game of a doubleheader, BYU defeated San Diego State 6-4 with the help of sophomore Chris Capper’s first win of the season on the mound.

Capper recorded two strikeouts over 5.2 innings while giving up three earned runs on six hits. Freshman Kolton Mahoney recorded his second save, striking out one. Senior Ryan Bernal collected two hits, including a two-run home run in the third inning.

“We have stressed scoring early and often,” Bernal said. “When the other team scores we have continued to come back and score.”

Junior Stephen Wells laced a leadoff double in the right-center gap to start the bottom of the first inning. Law, a senior, sacrificed him over to third on a bunt and junior Alex Wolfe brought him home on an RBI groundout to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.

In the top half of the second, BYU got some defensive help from left fielder Bernal as he made a relay throw to shortstop Law who threw out the Aztecs’ Jomel Torres at the plate trying to score from first on a double by SDSU’s Chris Wilson.

After Wells hit a groundball that was mishandled by the first baseman, junior Austin Hall advanced to third and then scored on a wild throw to first on the same play in the bottom of the fourth inning to give BYU a 4-0 advantage.

SDSU chipped away at the lead, cutting it to two runs in the sixth inning. The Aztecs’ Cody Slater singled home one more run but relief pitcher Chunner Nyberg came in and forced a double play to escape with the bases loaded and preserve the Cougar’s lead at 4-3.

BYU got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on the eventual game-winning single by Law. But San Diego State would not go quietly with Austin Haynal hitting a solo homer in the eighth inning to make it a one-run game again.

Hall led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to left-center and advanced to third on a throwing error. Nielsen brought him home on a sacrifice fly to give BYU an insurance run to secure the Cougars’ second win of the series.

“Today's second game was well pitched on both sides,” BYU coach Vance Law said. “We competed hard. We came back in the ninth and had the tying run at the plate in the 10th.”

BYU’s Matthew Neil went 7.1 innings on the mound but Aztec starter Cole Swanson (1-1) stayed strong through nine innings to earn the win. BYU’s Blake Torgerson (0-1) took the loss in relief.

The Cougars scored first again in the second game, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Brugman drove a double off the base of the center field wall before coming in on a two-out throwing error by Aztec third basemen Pat Colwell.

The Aztecs responded with back-to-back doubles in the top of the fourth to even the score. Bernal ended the SDSU rally by chasing down a deep fly at the warning track for the final out of the inning.

San Diego State took its first lead of the doubleheader when Wilson scored from third on a single to left by center fielder Cody Smith. Wolfe limited the damage by making an outstanding defensive play to end the inning. After a pitch, the Cougar catcher picked off Smith at third base with two Aztecs in scoring position.

Torgerson, a team co-captain back after a medical redshirt season, came on in relief of Neil in the bottom of the eighth and got the Aztecs to hit into a textbook 4-6-3 double play to strand an SDSU runner at third base.

BYU third basemen Bret Lopez delivered a clutch hit in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. After Swanson retired the first two batters of the inning, Lopez knocked a 1-0 count pitch over the left field wall to even the tally at 2-2 and give BYU new life.

That new life was short-lived, however, as SDSU used four hits to put three runs across the plate in the top of the 10th. After leading off with his fourth hit of the game, Brugman later came around to score for BYU in the bottom half of the inning but the Aztecs were able to hold on for the 5-3 victory.

BYU goes on the road to face Pepperdine in a three-game non-conference series staring on Thursday in Malibu, Calif. Friday and Saturday's games will be broadcast on Radio 960 AM and 92.9 FM.
