Red Raiders Take Classic Opener
LUBBOCK -- Three times the score was tied Thursday in a baseball game BYU lost to host Texas Tech, 7-4, to open the Brooks Wallace Classic.
The Red Raiders remained perfect at 5-0, while BYU fell to 1-3 after knotting the score at 1-1, 3-3 and 4-4.
“We swung the bats better, “ said BYU coach Vance Law. “We are still striking out too much, but that will change. We continue to battle, but I’m not discouraged, just disappointed.”
BYU’s Austin Hall hit a one-out double to left field, then stole third and scored on a sac-fly by Chase Frampton to tie the score 1-1 in the second.
Cougar Ryan Bernal, who played left field instead of first base, gave BYU a brief 2-1 lead in the fourth when he hit a solo homer to right field off a full count.
Catcher Alex Wolfe joined Hall in advancing their hitting streaks to 16 games apiece when he hit a one-out solo homer in the sixth. Wolfe’s homer, his first of the year, came off the Red Raiders’ third reliever of the game to tie the score 3-3.
In the seventh BYU tied the score once again when Frampton led off with a single and scored off Stephen Wells’ two-out double.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t score more runs with all of our hits and extra bases,” said Law. “We had runners at second base a lot with one out, then weren’t able to get a couple of big hits. We put ourselves into a bind by walking too many and hitting a batter. Each time we scored they came back.”
BYU co-captain Andrew Law went hitless to end his eight-game hitting streak.
Game times for Friday’s contests have been moved back one hour to 1 and 5 p.m., against Northern Illinois, 0-2, and Texas Tech, respectively.
