Pair of JC Signees Join Four Preps

A pair of junior college players joined four prepsters in signing November national letters of intent with BYU baseball.

Coach Vance Law announced that Matt Milke, a right-handed pitcher, and Christian Mua, an outfielder are transferring to BYU from Southwestern College in Chula Vista, Calif. Southwestern is the JC which produced former Cougars Marcos Villescas, Adrian Molina, Mike McKeever and Kiko Hermosillo.

Joining them are infielder Tanner Chauncey and right-handed pitcher Cameron Coombs, both from Las Vegas, Nevada. The two Utah prep signees are right-handed pitchers James Lengal from Spanish Fork and Mason Marshall pitcher from South Jordan.

Tanner Chauncey, 6-1, 160, Infielder, Las Vegas High, Las Vegas, Nev.
Batted over .600 and led the state in hitting.  Was all-state, two-time all-region, team captain and offensive MVP.  Played summer ball for the Utah Marshalls.
Coach Law on Chauncey: "He is a solid shortstop who has played a lot of baseball around he country.  This exposure has been great for him and he is good defensively and offensively."
 
Cameron Coombs, 6-4, 210, RHP/1B, Durango High, Las Vegas, Nev.
Was 5-4 with a 3.30 ERA and clocked 93 mph.
Coach Law on Coombs: "He is big, strong and has yet to tap his potential.  He has a chance to be a hard-throwing righthander and could be a force on our staff."
 
James Lengal, 6-2, 175, RHP, Spanish Fork High, Spanish Fork, Utah
Had a 2-0 record as a pitcher and batted .409 with 31 RBI.  Also played first base.  Was 4-A First Team All-State and all-tournament.
Coach Law on Lengal: "We like him, especially on the mound.  He hurt his shoulder his junior year and has rehabbed, so we are hoping he comes back to form to utilize his potential."
 
Mason Marshall, 5-8, 140, RHP, Bingham High, South Jordan, Utah
Was 4-1 with a 2.30 ERA, five saves in 19 innings with 22 strikeouts and nine walks.  Was two-time all-region and came back from a mid-season appendectomy.
Coach Law on Marshall: "He is one of the better pitchers in Utah.  He is deceptive, but very, very good.  He throws in the upper 80s and low 90s and is a good strike-thrower. He has good command of his breaking balls."
 
Matt Milke, 6-4, 205, RHP, Southwestern College, Chula Vista, Calif.
Had a 7-3 record with a 3.38 ERA in 85.1 innings, 16 games and 80 strikeouts. Honorable mention All-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference and prepped at Mater Dei High. Father George pitched for USC on two NCAA title teams in the College World Series, was CWS MVP in 1974 and played in the New York Mets’ organization.
Coach Law on Milke: "He is a polished pitcher who can command the slider.  He is one of the better pitchers in Southern California. He has a good family baseball background."
 
Christian Mua, 6-0, 195, OF, Southwestern College, Chula Vista, Calif.
Batted .270 and was 10 of 11 in stolen bases.  Righthander prepped at Bonita Vista High.
Coach Law on Mua: "He is a solid outfielder who has good power for his size.  He has a chance to be a real contributor offensively for us."
