Incoming Trio Drafted

Three incoming BYU signees were selected in the just-concluded 2010 Major League Baseball Draft.

Derek Cone was the 952nd pick as a 31st round draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Jaycob Brugman was drafted in the 39th round by the New York Yankees, and Jacob Hannemann was drafted in the 48th round by the Kansas City Royals.

Cone, a 6-5, 180 right-handed pitcher from Mesa Community College was a teammate of Brugman at Desert Vista Thunder High School in Phoenix, Ariz. Brugman, a 6-0, 175, outfielder was 5A first team all-state. Cone and Brugman were November signees with BYU. Cone is married to Brugman's sister.

Hannemann, a 6-1, 190 centerfielder from Lone Peak High in Highland, signed a February football letter of intent with BYU as a defensive back. Earlier this month Hannemann was a first team all-state selection.

"It was surprising that none of our current players were drafted," said BYU coach Vance Law, "but that makes us that much better next year."

In related BYU baseball news, Coach Law will be traveling to Pittsburgh for the 50th anniversary for the 1960 World Series Champions on June 19. Law's father Vernon, former BYU assistant coach, was the 1960 Cy Young winner on that team. Both Laws played professionally for the Pirates.
