PROVO -- Stephen Wells hit a grand slam and recorded five RBI Friday as BYU (22-27 overall, 9-11 MWC) beat San Diego State (25-25 overall, 10-10 MWC) 13-5 at Larry H. Miller Field.

“I was just trying to hit a fly ball to the outfield to score the guy from third,” Wells said. “I put a pretty good swing on it and it was good to get those four runs in and take the lead.”

Back-to-back walks in the fourth inning loaded the bases for the sophomore Wells, who put BYU up 6-1 with his first grand slam as a Cougar, his fifth round tripper of the season. Wells was 3-for-5 with five RBI on the night, and the Cougars scored seven in the inning.

After giving up one run in the first inning, freshman pitcher Chris Capper settled in and got the win on the hill for the Cougars, going six innings and striking out five, while picking up his third win of the season.

Senior outfielder Sean McNaughton tied the Mountain West Conference career home run record with his 14th long ball of the season in the fourth inning, a three-run shot. With that home run, McNaughton tied Chris Alexander of New Mexico, who reached 50 career home runs in 2003.

Sophomore Austin Hall added an insurance run in the fifth with his first home run of the season. Second baseman Dane Nielsen, who was 2-for-2 with a stolen base, followed Hall with his 10th double of the year as BYU went on to score three in the inning to extend the lead to 12-1.

Sophomore David Parry replaced Capper (3-1)in the seventh, and with the change Alex Wolfe moved to catcher where he hasn’t seen action since dislocating his left knee in 2009.

Senior Brandon Relf, who leads the Cougars in hitting with a .349 average, was 2-for-5 with a double and three runs.

The Cougars look to sweep the Aztecs and move into a tie for third place with them in the conference.

“I think we realize how important tomorrow is,” said BYU head coach Vance Law. “I’m after a good, solid performance and if we swing the bats the way we are capable of and get strikes from our pitchers, we’ll be able to pick up another win. “

First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on BYUtv. The Cougars will honor seven seniors in pre-game ceremonies.
