Lobos Take Early Lead

ALBUQUERQUE -- Six unearned runs Thursday night set BYU back in an 11-5 loss to New Mexico.

BYU finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning after falling behind 6-0. The Cougars scored a pair of runs that inning when Chase Frampton singled and scored off Dane Nielsen’s triple. Nielsen then scored on a groundout by Alex Hancock.

Frampton hit a two-out RBI single to score Alex Wolfe from second in the sixth to close the margin to 7-3.

The score improved to 11-5 when Hancock led off with a double in the seventh, followed by Sean McNaughton’s homer.

The Cougars turned an inning-ending double play in the seventh when Hancock threw out a runner at home, then Bryce Ayoso threw to second to get the Lobo trying to advance from first on the throw. Hancock was playing in place of Stephen Wells who was ill.

“The fourth inning was the turning point in the ballgame, “ said BYU coach Vance Law. “We had two outs and all we had to do was make a routine play. They swing the bats really well in this stadium and make you pay. I have such high expectations for our offense and we just have to score seven or eight runs every game.”

The Cougars fall to 13-15 overall and 3-4 in the Mountain West Conference, while New Mexico improves to 20-10 and 7-3. The two teams meet again on Friday night for the second of a three-game series.
