Five Pitchers Sign With Cougars

Pitchers Mark Anderson, Nick Birch, Devin Brewer, Chris Howard, and D. J. Stanley, have signed letters of intent with BYU’s baseball team.

Mark Anderson, a 6-2, 170 outfielder/left-handed pitcher from Moreno Valley, Calif., was all-area second team playing for Vista del Lago High. He batted .376 and had a 1.79 ERA with one shutout and a 10-2 record. He was first team All-CIF, All-Inland Valley League and a Riverside County all-star.

Nick Birch, a 6-1, 185, pitcher from Idaho Falls, Idaho was first-team all-conference and helped win the state championship prior to pitching for Treasure Valley Community College in Oregon where he had four saves last season.

Brewer, 5-11, 200 was voted the MVP at Oak Grove High in Hattiesburg, Miss., and played in the 2009 Mississippi High School All-Star Baseball Game. He had 6-0 record, with a 1.54 ERA, four shutouts, 79 strikeouts, and 12 walks in 60 innings as a senior and had a 16-2 career prep record.

Howard, 6-1, 183, is a left-handed pitcher/outfielder from Fountain-Fort Carson High in Colorado Springs, Colo. 6-1, 1.47 ERA. He played in the City/Suburban Senior All-Star Classic, was honorable mention all-state and was the city 4A-5A pitcher of the Year.

Stanley, 5-11, 165, from Gilmer, Texas, had a 2.29 earned run average and 86 strikeouts. He was all-district first team in the 3A ranks as a utility player. Stanley was honorable mention all-state, academic all-state and all-district and threw a three-hitter this past season.
