Righthander Marc Oslund of BYU was selected last week as a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American pitcher by Collegiate Baseball Magazine.

The 6-5, 215 freshman from Torrance, Calif., compiled a 7-1 record with a 2.49 ERA and 59 strikeouts (an 8.2 average) in 65 innings. Oslund had 22 appearances, one save and four starts, including a complete game in a 5-1 victory to eliminate New Mexico from the Mountain West Conference Tournament.

He also had another victory over New Mexico earlier in the year along with wins at Washington where he had eight strikeouts, Utah, Western Carolina, and a three-hitter at Wichita State. His save came in game three of the regular season against UNLV. He also had nine strikeouts in a relief appearance against Utah.

Oslund was named to the MWC all-tourney team and plans to serve a Church mission to North Carolina for the next two years.

“Marc is deserving of this honor,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “He certainly didn’t pitch like a freshman. He was a great bridge to Jordan Muir (set the school save’s record with 11) and had a couple of quality starts.”

Oslund is the 12th player in Cougar history to earn Freshman All-America honors. The last BYU player before Oslund to earn Freshman All-American honors was third baseman Steve Parker in 2007.
