Rivalry Continues In Tourney Opener
For the 308th time BYU plays Utah at 3 p.m. (CDT) in Tuesday's opening round of the 2009 Conoco Mountain West Conference Baseball Tournament at Ft. Worth, Texas.
The third-seeded Cougars, now 28-22 overall, have played sixth-seeded Utah, 21-28, the foe it has contested the most, in recent years at Hawai`i, California, New Mexico, Nevada and Texas. BYU has a 213-93-2 record against Utah in that span. The two teams were also paired against each other in game one of the MWC Tournament last season, with the Utes winning, 9-3.
BYU won five of the six games this season vs. Utah, losing only a 15-13 game to the Utes in Provo. Ironically, the starting pitcher for that game was junior righthander Blake Torgerson (6-3, 6.07), whom BYU Coach Vance Law has announced will start Tuesday’s game.
BYU's games in the double-elimination tournament will be broadcast live locally over KSRR (1400 AM) and on the Internet through BYU Radio.
The entire Conoco Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship will be televised live, with The Mtn.–MountainWest Sports Network and CBS College Sports Network (CBS C) providing the coverage. All tournament games will be shown live on The Mtn. In addition to The Mtn.’s production and live broadcast of the entire MWC Baseball Championship, CBS College Sports Network will simulcast all tournament action on Wednesday, May 20 and Thursday, May 21.
The winner of the Conoco MWC Baseball Championship will earn an automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
