Parker MWC Player of Week

COLORADO SPRINGS -- BYU junior Steve Parker has been named Mountain West Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while San Diego State junior righthander Stephen Strasburg and UNLV freshman righthander Tanner Peters have been named the Mountain West Conference Co- Pitchers of the Week, respectively.

Parker, an American Fork, Utah, native, hit .471 (8-for-17) from the plate, with two home runs, four doubles, two RBI and four runs scored as BYU went 3-2 last week, including a three-game sweep over conference-foe Utah. In game one of a two-game series at No. 14 Oregon State, Parker went 2-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored and a stolen base in a 7-6 loss. In game-two vs. the Beavers, he went 2-for-4 with a homer, a double, one RBI and two runs scored in an 8-4 loss. In the game-opening series vs. Utah, Parker went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in BYU’s 7-4 victory. In game two, he went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored in the Cougars’ 12-7 win. He concluded the series with a 1-for-3 performance in BYU’s 3-2 win. Defensively, Parker tallied four putouts and seven assists with no errors from the third base position.

Strasburg, from San Diego, Calif., tossed a complete-game shutout in SDSU’s 1-0 win at New Mexico on April 17. He walked one and struck out 14, while scattering seven hits. In the fifth inning, he gave up a leadoff triple, but then forced a grounder to third and two strikeouts to end the threat. In the ninth, UNM had a runner on third with one out, but Strasburg struck out the next two batters to finish the contest. It was his first complete game of the season and eighth time in nine starts that he reached double digits in strikeouts.

Peters, a Simi Valley, Calif., product, became just the fifth UNLV hurler to throw a complete-game one-hitter (the first since 1985) in the Rebels’ 2-0 victory over Northern Colorado last Friday. Peters faced just three batters over the minimum in the first complete game effort for UNLV this season. The only hit allowed for the game came in the fourth on a leadoff double. Peters retired the next three batters in order to end the threat. He finished with seven strikeouts against three walks for the game.
