Red Cougars Defeat Blue Cougars

PULLMAN -- Washington State led, fell behind and then scored eight runs in the sixth inning Monday night to claim a 12-8 victory over BYU.

BYU, now 18-11, twice tied the game and took the lead in the fifth inning, but lost it the next inning. WSU is now 13-13.

Blue Cougar Kent Walton drove in Sean McNaughton to tie the score in the fifth as WSU put in the first of four relievers. Then Brandon Relf drove in a pair of runs to bring in Walton and Steve Parker to put BYU up 5-3.

WSU coach Donnie Marbut was ejected in the fourth inning when Michael Bowen was stealing second and advance to third on an errant toss when Kasey Ko was thought to interfere with that throw. Ko then singled to bring in Michael Bowen to tie the game at two apiece.

A lead-off double, followed by a walk threatened Cougar hurler Nathan Bunch with no outs in the fifth, but he was spared by a 5-4-3 double play.

Then A home run and double both by WSU’s Matt Argyropoulos and a pair of misplayed balls enabled the red Cougars to take a 11-5 lead from an eighth-run sixth inning as they batted around.

Walton extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a solo homer, his seventh of the year, to left field to put BYU on the board, 2-1 in the third.

Chad Nacapoy knocked a solo homer in the ninth for BYU in the ninth.

The teams conclude the two-game series Tuesday evening.
