Bunch, Banks Lead To T-Bird Defeat

PROVO -- Freshman pitcher Nathan Bunch threw a four-hitter to lead BYU to an 8-3 victory over Southern Utah on Tuesday at Larry H. Miller Field.

Bunch pitched his first career and the Cougars’ first complete game of the year in securing the team’s eighth win of the season and improving his record to 1-0, throwing 120 pitches.

“It was a lot of fun being able to go all the way,” Bunch said, “I haven’t pitched on our home mound since the fall, so it took a little time to find my rhythm. Once I got my mechanics back I started to pitch much better.”

Offensively the Cougars (8-6) were led by Stetson Banks who went 3-for-4 including a first-inning solo homerun to center field that tied the score at one all.

“Banks is a great player,” said BYU head baseball coach Vance Law. “He puts a lot of pressure on the defense.”

Scoring the second and third runs for the Cougars were Steve Parker and Jonathan Cluff who both reached home in the first inning on a throwing error from Southern Utah’s catcher Dalen Isom.

On the defensive side the Cougars were bailed out in the top of the first inning by an incredible double play by right fielder Michael Bowen, who made a diving grab and then jumped to his feet and threw out the runner on second.

BYU’s solid defensive performance continued in the second and third innings. In the top of the second Southern Utah left three stranded after Bunch forced two fly balls to end the inning. The top of the third inning ended in similar fashion with the Thunderbirds leaving two more players on.

“He (Bunch) has done great all year long,” Law said. “Once he got his feet under him he did an outstanding job.”

Bunch was provided with extensive run support in the bottom of the second inning when the Cougars scored two runs off of four hits. Bowen started the inning with a line drive double to left field. J.T. Musso continued the innings success driving in Bowen with a single to center field for what proved to be the game-winning RBI. With a man on first and third, Sean McNaughton hit a sacrifice fly to right field putting the Cougars up 5-1.

“Our guys came out with intensity and kept the momentum going through out the game,” Law said. “We were hitting well and it became contagious.”

The Cougars bats came alive again in the bottom of the fourth with a lead off bunt single by Banks. Banks stole second and then scored the Cougars sixth run off of a single up the middle by Steve Parker.

In the top of the eighth the Cougars ran into some trouble after two SUU players reached base off of two errors. T-bird pinch hitter Derek Pena capitalized hitting a double to right center driving in two runs cutting into the BYU lead (6-3). Bunch cleaned up the mess retiring Matt Sanford to a sacrifice fly for the final out of the inning.

BYU scored two more runs in another impressive outing in the eighth inning. Parker who batted in a run in the eighth ended the game going 3-for-3. Extending the Cougar lead was Cluff who hit a sacrifice fly to left field driving McNaughton home in the games final run securing an 8-3 win.

The Cougars resume play on Thursday when they begin conference play against arch rival Utah. The three-game series with Utah starts in Salt Lake City at 3 p.m., followed by games in Provo at Miller Park on Friday and Saturday at 6 and 1 p.m., respectively.

All of the BYU-Utah games will be broadcast live over KSRR Radio (1400 AM) it is the first radio broadcast of the year by veteran announcer Brent Norton. Friday and Saturday’s games will be televised live on BYUTV.
