Oslund, Cluff Help Down Wichita St.
WICHITA -- Pitcher Mark Oslund teamed with centerfielder Jonathan Cluff to lift BYU to a 3-1 victory over Wichita State on Tuesday afternoon amidst gusty winds.
Oslund, a freshman righthander from Torrance, Calif., threw a three-hitter through seven-plus innings before being relieved by a pair of relievers, the last of which was senior Jordan Muir. Muir picked up his second save by retiring four Shockers, the pair coming from a 1-6-3 double play to end the ninth inning.
Oslund gave up singles in the second and third innings and a double off the wall in the sixth. He also set WSU down in order in the first, fifth and seventh innings. Oslund improved his record to 2-0 and lowered his earned run average to .066.
Cluff, a junior from South Jordan, knocked a two-run homer in the sixth, bringing in Alex Wolfe, to put BYU ahead, 3-1. Cluff was a triple shy of the cycle, having a single in the second, a double in the fourth and his first dinger of the year.
The Shockers were first on the board with an unearned run when Chris O’Brien’s fly to right field wasn’t held long enough by Michael Bowen and the WSU runner advance to third on the error in the second inning.
The Cougars tied the score 1-1 in the fourth when Steve Parker singled to right, advanced to third on a one-out double by Cluff and crossed the plate on a groundout by Brandon Relf.
BYU had a base-runner every inning. Cougar Kent Walton was robbed of a home run in the seventh when Caster jumped at the fence to retrieve Walton’s poke.
The Cougars handed WSU its first home loss of the season, a team that had a 33-6 record at home last season.
The Shockers' record is now 6-2, while BYU improves to 4-6. The Cougars return to Provo to host St. John’s, 2-3, in a three-game series starting Friday at 6 p.m., in a game televised live by BYUTV.
