Coming From Behind Beats Bears

Greeley, Colo. (April 28, 2008)--Freshman righthander Justin Shutt pitched six innings of shutout ball, walked none and scattered four hits Monday in BYU's 10-5 victory over Northern Colorado.

Shutt picked up his first college victory as he successfully relieved freshman lefty Daniel Welch in the fourth when the Cougars were down 5-1. The Cougars, now 17-26, rallied behind Shutt.

"This was by far the best game Justin has thrown in relief," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "He changed speeds, hit the strike zone and took a step in the right direction in the transition from high school. Our hitters battled well and put up runs when we needed them."

Kasey Ko hit a two-out double in the second and scored BYU's first run when Jonathan Cluff singled him in.

Cluff picked up his second hit of the day and was doubled in the fifth by J.C. Leach. Leach scored on J.T. Musso's single. Then Sean McNaughton hit a two-run homer. BYU's fifth run of that inning came when Dan Vargas singled, stole second and scored on an error.

Cluff struck out in the sixth, but got on base via an error. He then stole second and followed Vargas' path of scoring on an error, giving the Cougars a 7-5 margin.

That lead increased when Kent Walton hit a solo homer in the seventh and Ko doubled and scored off Steve Parker's single to put BYU up 9-5.

Vargas gave BYU an insurance run in the ninth when he walked, stole second, advanced to third on Walton's fly-out and scored on a wild pitch as the Bears got out of that frame with the bases loaded.

BYU plays the Bears, now 15-29, again on Tuesday afternoon when Cougar lefty Eric Judd starts on the mound.
