Washington Rallies Over Cougars

Seattle (April 10, 2008)--Consecutive doubles and a two-run homer by Washington offset BYU's seven-inning lead Thursday night as the Cougars lost to the Huskies, 5-1.

Kyle Conley's home run and doubles by Bradley Boyer and Troy Scott preceded a two-run homer by Ty Rasmussen in the five-run eighth inning. Those hits erased the 1-0 lead shutout Jordan Muir had going for the Cougars.

The Huskies improved to 22-9 and BYU fell to 14-19 overall.

Husky southpaw Nick Haughian struck out five of his 14 Cougars in the first two innings, including the final batter of the second inning with two Cougars aboard being hit by pitches. Haughian improved to 4-2 and has struck out 29 in his last two appearances, including a nine-inning 1-0 shutout against the University of Arizona.

Haughian's no-hitter vanished in the third from back-to-back singles by Kent Walton and Sean McNaughton. Walton stole second and scored as McNaughton extended his team-leading hitting streak to 16 games on the single to left field.

McNaughton stole third on a double steal started when UW tried to throw him out as Dan Vargas moved to second. McNaughton, however, was thrown out at home on the errant throw as the ball ricocheted off the fence to enable a perfect strike.

Haughian recorded his ninth and 10th strikeouts in the fifth inning after having Cougars J.T. Musso and Brandon Relf on base. The two Cougars advanced to third and second, respectively, before UW got Steve Parker to ground out.

In the sixth inning McNaughton and Vargas got mixed up on a Boyer popup that he legged out for a one-out double after a full count. McNaughton and Vargas nearly tangled again as McNaughton recorded out number two and Vargas ended the UW threat going behind second base to field a grounder.

The two teams meet again on Friday night at 6:30, with a third game on Saturday being moved up to 11 a.m. PDT.
