Spokane, Wash. (February 29, 2008)--One slipped away and the other one got away as BYU's baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Gonzaga, 7-6 and 12-5.

BYU, now 1-5, was ahead most of game one and trailed 3-2 midway in game two before it got out of hand. Gonzaga, now 3-4, hosts the Cougars in a single game Saturday morning for the fourth contest in the series.

In the nightcap, Dan Vargas' one-out triple scored Sean McNaughton in the third. Vargas was singled in by Walton to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, making the score 3-2.

The Cougars didn't score again until the seventh when Brandon Relf doubled and crossed the plate on McNaughton's sac-fly. That was followed by a leadoff single from Walton, who was doubled in by Thomas Bills in the eighth. Bryce Ayoso doubled in Bills to make the score 10-5.

In Friday's first game, the Cougars were never behind with Jordan Muir on the mound, but Gonzaga took advantage when he left the game in the eighth with a 5-3 lead.

BYU grabbed the early lead when Vargas hit a two-out double to score Relf to give BYU a 1-0 lead in the third.

Vargas led off with a single in the sixth and scored on the next play when Kent Walton tripled. Two batters later, Kasey Ko singled in Walton to put the Cougars up, 3-1.

In the seventh, J.T. Musso hit a one-out triple and scored Sean McNaughton's groundout to third. Vargas then hit a two-out single, stole second and scored when Walton singled to rightfield.

Muir was replaced by a pair of relievers in the eighth and Mark McKimmy blasted a three-run homer to put the Zags on top, 7-5.

Relf led off with a double and advanced around the bases to score on a wild pitch and a passed ball in the ninth to bring the Cougars within one run, 7-6. McNaughton then doubled, but was caught stealing to third in a rundown.
