Four-game Series At Gonzaga
A four-game series at Gonzaga this week brings the challenge of BYU's baseball team facing better pitching.
The Cougars, 1-2, open the series at Spokane, Wash., on Thursday at 3 p.m., followed by a Friday doubleheader at noon and a fourth game on Saturday at 11 a.m. Gonzaga is 0-4 this season, but won the first of three games last year in Provo.
The probable starting pitchers for BYU are Jake Wortham (0-0, 2.25), Jordan Muir (0-1, 5.40), Nelson Castleberry (0-0, 1.80) and Sean Amerson (0-0, 18.00), in that order. Wortham's two-hit outing in eight-plus innings last week brought him no decision, but led to BYU's 4-2 victory in 11 innings at Portland.
"We didn't swing the bats as well as I thought we would, but we moved around the bases in good order in our first game," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "It was disconcerting to not score later in the series when we had runners on third. And we are concerned about walking leadoff batters."
Cougar junior Kent Walton brings a current 10-game hitting streak into this week's action.
