An Out Away, Hopeful of NCAA Berth

LAS -- MVP Austin Adams' three-run homer propelled TCU past BYU as it went on to win the Mountain West Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon, 9-8.

With one out remaining in the game, BYU had a comfortable 8-5 victory snatched from it by Adams' blast to dead-center over the fence at the green batter's eye screen which tied the score eight-all. Two batters later the Horned Frogs earned the automatic berth in NCAA post-season play. Meanwhile, the devastated Cougars wait, mulling 'what-ifs' on a long bus-ride home, hoping their 37-20 record will be attractive enough for an invitation on Monday.

"I feel bad for BYU," TCU Coach Jim Schlossnagle told the crowd over the public address system in post-game ceremonies. "They are a great team. We have played them 14 times and every game has been a dog fight. It will be a travesty if they don't get in the NCAA Tournament."

The valiant Cougars had the defending champs down for the count for the second straight day and ready for a third game had they been able to pull off the victory.

"Give those guys credit for bouncing back," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We weren't as patient and selective as we were earlier in the game. We didn't come up with any timely hits--the bigger the game, the more important the execution.

"Blaine (Howell) pitched a great game for us."

Howell, a southpaw freshman from North Carolina, made his eighth start of the season as the Cougars were fighting an uphill battle after falling in the loser's bracket on Friday following a one-run loss to TCU.

TCU rested while BYU clawed its way back by beating UNLV late Friday night. Howell and company found the right chemistry to take a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Cougars took advantage of the sun, a balk and a sac-fly as Kent Walton led off with a double and scored to put them up 4-0 in the third.

The Cougars turned key double plays in the second, third and fourth innings. But the fourth and fifth frames were where early signs of unraveling started to show.

First, Walton missed second base as he tried to advance to third on Steve Parker's single to center field in the two-run fourth and was called out on an appeal. Then BYU left the bases loaded in the two-run fifth. In the bottom of that frame, the ball flipped out of Leon Johnson's glove following a lengthy sprint in right field.

By the time Howell left the game in the seventh, though, BYU had it's 8-5 lead. Reliever Matt Jensen was on his way to a second save in three days and Cougar coaches were scrambling to see which pitchers might be available for a championship game in the evening.

It came to an end too quickly. Soon Parker, Stephen Wells, Kasey Ko and Apana Nakayama were being applauded as they were named to the all-tournament team. The honors seem shallow compared with the gnawing feeling knowing how close they came to knocking off TCU, a team responsible for six of BYU's 20 losses this season.

Perhaps the two victories over the No. 18 Horned Frogs earlier this season, one of which came at the hands of MWC Pitcher of the Year Jesse Craig, the senior Cougar ace with 10-2 record and 2.94 ERA will be attractive to the NCAA selection committee.

Perhaps a victory over top 20 Missouri or pairs of wins over Washington and Gonzaga or being the No. 1 team in the land for hitting triples may push BYU over the bubble.

Or perhaps winning 22 of the past 29 games since April might convince someone to give the speedy Cougars another chance to show off the best ERA in 24 years.
