Walton Keys Sixth-Inning Rally
PROVO -- Facing a 7-2 deficit in the bottom of the sixth, BYU came alive scoring nine runs and went on to win 12-10 against Binghamton on Monday.
BYU (16-13, 3-3 in conference) came alive in a big way in the bottom of the sixth scoring nine runs, eight of those coming with two outs. Things got started when Kasey Ko hit a double to score Steve Parker, after four more runs came across the plate for the Cougars, Kent Walton hit a towering three-run home run. Then before the inning was over Ko hit in another run to give BYU the 11-7 lead.
"We had a couple of guys who came up big in the inning and kept it going," Walton said. "The saying goes that hitting is contagious."
The Cougars were led by Walton who went three for five with four RBI, and Parker who went four-for-five with two RBI on the day.
Binghamton (6-6) pitcher Gino Offerman picked up the loss and Matthew Jensen, 3-3, picked up the win for the Cougars.
"Jensen played great," Coach Vance Law said. "He came in strong and gave us a big lift out of the bullpen."
In the first starting pitcher Jesse Craig was inconsistent on the mound for the Cougars as he allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three batters. In the bottom of the inning Walton got BYU on the board when he hit a double down the left field line to bring in Apana Nakayama and make the score 2-1 in favor of the Bearcats.
An error-filled second inning led to two more runs for Binghamton, but Craig was able to get out of the frame without any further damage by striking out another Bearcat to end the inning trailing 4-1.
In the top of the fourth Binghamton again got to Craig as shortstop Justin Smucker hit a two-run home run. Smucker was the last batter Craig faced, as Law turned to right hander Jensen to pitch for the Cougars. Jensen was able to get out of the inning and keep the score 6-1.
Parker started off the bottom of the fourth in a big way hitting a solo shot over the centerfield wall to bring BYU within four runs of the Bearcats, 6-2. Unfortunately, Parker's home run was the only thing BYU was able to get in the fourth as the next three batters were retired in order.
Jensen followed up the Cougars offensive outburst by retiring the Binghamton side in the top of the seventh, and maintaining the 11-7 lead for BYU.
BYU withstood a rally in the bottom of the ninth by Binghamton. The Bearcats rallied to score three runs in the inning, but the rally was ended after the Cougar defense turned a double-play to preserve the 12-10 win.
"Other than that one inning where we exploded we played sloppy," Law said. "But my guys played hard and battled and I can't fault them for that."
Up next BYU hosts UNLV this week in a three-game series at Larry H. Miller Field. The series starts on Thursday at 6 p.m.
