Bearcats Bounce Cougars
PROVO -- Starting out strong in the first two innings, Binghamton University continued to charge Saturday, landing an 11-6 win over BYU.
The first inning was the start to the Bearcat lead. After a double to centerfield, Justin Smucker was shortly back at home following a deep single from Matt Simek. A Bearcat sac fly brought Simek home bringing the lead to 2-0 as BYU committed three errors.
On the first hit of the second inning, Bearcat Pat Haughie homered, stretching the lead to 3-0.
The second inning was the perfect time for the Cougars to show they wanted to take control of the game. Third baseman, Steve Parker was first to score for BYU with a powerful home run. J.T. Musso continued to add runs on the board after hitting a ground ball to the shortstop and being brought home by Austin Hall's double.
In the fourth, the Bearcats built a strong lead scoring seven runs, six earned, bringing the score 10-2.
BYU tried to stage a comeback in the bottom of the sixth. Thomas Bills set-out to lessen the scoring gap with a centerfield single. Bills made it home after Musso pounded the ball to left field. Chase Frampton scored another run for the Cougars. Then Musso made it home after a hit to left field from Leon Johnson, which made the score, 10-5.
In the seventh inning, the Bearcats scored their last run of the night after Henry Dunn was hit by a pitch, advanced on a sac bunt and a wild pitch, then made it home on Simek's single, putting Binghamton up 11-5.
At the bottom of the seventh, BYU's Kent Walton made it home following a lead-off triple to bring BYU back within five, 11-6.
BYU is tied with the Bearcats in the series 1-1. The two will meet again Monday at 4 p.m. at the Larry H. Miller Field when Jesse Craig is scheduled to pitch for the Cougars.
